The topic of the article is Utility of an African-centered support group for African American men confronting societal racism and oppression. The authors employed a review of literature as the method of study. The study found that there was no single article that had been published in any of the major psychological journals about the topic of study. The study intended to “…outline the use of an African-centered group approach to helping African American men develop effective coping skills to successfully ameliorate the impact of societal racism and oppression on their lives” (Elligan, & Utsey 1999, include the page number when quoting). The topic of the article is: discrimination concerns and expectations as explanations for gendered socialization in African American families. The authors employed context study method of research. From the study, it was found out that expectations of maternal were connected to the responsiveness of the mother, monitoring, parent-adolescent conflict, and rule enforcement. The relationship between parenting practices and gender was partly explained through the expectations and racial discrimination worries of the mother. The study concludes that the findings clearly show the benefit of contextual factors on African American family processes (Varner, & Mandara 2013).
