4 Literary Essay: Fireflies! Name Institution Course Number and Title Professor Date Introduction Fireflies is the story of a young boy when he realizes there are fireflies outside one evening. The story explains the excitement the boy endures when he spots the fireflies. He finishes his dinner quickly and grabs a jar from the basement to collect the insects. The boy considers alarming his friends, but they are already aware and are trying to collect fireflies. The boy successfully captures a firefly, but he realizes that the firefly may not survive as the evening progresses. He releases the firefly and witnesses as its flicker becomes brighter and stronger. The claim statement for this analysis is that the central theme of Fireflies is compassion. Elements that bring people joy can also bring sadness; capturing and releasing fireflies highlights the mixed emotions that comprise compassion. Compassion in Fireflies! An analysis of fireflies can be done by assessing the story in two episodes, before the primary character captures a firefly and after the capture. In the first episode, the boy is eating dinner on a summer evening when he notices a flicker. The episode is vital in demonstrating the boy’s compassion for fireflies as his excitement is overwhelming. He finishes dinner quickly so that he can go outside, illustrated by the phrase, “I forked the meat and corn and potatoes into my mouth.” The parents in this scene acknowledge the boy’s excitement as “Momma smiled, and Daddy nodded,” allowing him to go out (Brinckloe, 2009). The author of the story emphasizes the boy’s compassion by constantly asserting “Fireflies!” in the text to describe the character’s experience. In this episode, the boy’s actions are at a high pace to facilitate his interaction with fireflies as quickly as possible. He runs downstairs to get a jar and also asserts, “We ran like crazy, barefoot in the grass” to capture fireflies (Brinckloe, 2009). The end of the episode involves the boy capturing fireflies and returning home. After the experience, he also experiences different emotions; he has moved on from excitement to pride. The second episode begins when the boy watches the fireflies from his bed. Here, the boy also experiences a mixture of negative emotions. At first, he is upset; this is illustrated by “I tried to swallow, but something in my throat would not go down” (Brinckloe, 2009). As the night progresses, he becomes concerned and worried and tries to hide under his pillow. The assertion that “They were my fireflies. I caught them” reflects that the boy is conflicted. At this point in the story, he has to decide as the fireflies may not last the night, let them go, or spend the remaining time with them. The dilemma illustrates that the boy cares and is concerned about the fireflies and decides to let them go. Although he is sad, he is pleased with the decision as he asserts, “The moonlight and the fireflies swam in my tears, but I could feel myself smiling”(Brinckloe, 2009). Conclusion In conclusion, Fireflies is a story that is centered around compassion. It illustrates that the things which bring us joy can also cause sadness. The main character in the story experiences mixed emotions, from excitement to pride to concern. He feels compassion for the fireflies but the realization that they may not survive prompts him to release them. He is sad to see them leave but also smiles because they survive.
