Reply # 1 Connecting the description of Life along the Erie Canal, 1829 by Basil Hall and James Madison’s Call for Internal Improvements. While politics can cripple technology advancement that should be a bipartisan consensus, political policies get undeniably intertwined with technological developments. Political policies proposed by Madison in “James Madison asks Congress to support intern al improvements, 1815″ are evidenced as technological developments in ‘A traveler describes life along the Erie Canal, 1829” by Basil Hall , in a market revolution era of industry and commerce along the Erie Canal. The war of 1812 between Britain and Americ a ended with the signing of the treaty of Ghent. President James Madison urged Congress to embrace “the great importance of establishing throughout our country the roads and canals which can best be executed under the national authority” (“James Madison as ks Congress to support internal improvements, 1815 | The American Yawp Reader,” n.d.).Madison proposed a duty fee on foreign merchandise which would “not only safe against occasional competitions from abroad but a source of domestic wealth and even of exte rnal commerce” (“James Madison asks Congress to support internal improvements, 1815 | The American Yawp Reader,” n.d.) . Madison suggested “facilities for intercommunication” (“James Madison asks Cong ress to support internal improvements, 1815 | The American Yawp Reader,” n.d.) that would bring all things together. In his description of the Erie Canal, Basil Hall depicts many things that Madison proposed ushering us into the market revolution – 1800 -184 0, where there were innovations of transportation and communication. Basil states, “The chief source of the commercial and agricultural prosperity of Rochester is the Erie canal” (“traveler describes life along the Erie Canal, 1829 | The American Yawp Read er,” n.d.)Rochester had become an epicenter for trade that attracted settlers from “Germany, England, Ireland, and Scotland, and a few natives of Canada, Norway, and Switzerland”: there were also “emigrants from New England that is from the States of Massa chusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont” (“traveler describes life along the Erie Canal, 1829 | The American Yawp Reader,” n.d.) Water transportation in the market revolution was faster, which lowered trading expenditures and connected farmers to markets, thus improving domestic trade. Basil paints a picture of a market revolution along the busy Erie canal: where there was “the lifting up their voices together, in keeping with the clatter of hammers, the ringing of axes, and the creaking of machinery, there was a fine concert” (“traveler describes life along the Erie Canal, 1829 | The American Yawp Reader,” n.d.).Workers used the “art of man” skills Madison spoke about. “A Traveler Describes Life Along the Erie Canal, 1829” by Basil Hall is the unfolding of policies from James Madison’s call for internal improvements through a market revolution along the Erie Canal that ushered America into increased industrialization through improvement in transportation and communication. Reply #2 America was going through major changes in the 1800s such as a increase in manufacturing for industries all over America. A great example of a major industrial change was the Erie Canal. It made the transportation of industrial and agricultural goods much m ore easier and efficient, just like how Basil Hall described it in the writing “A Traveler Describes Life Along The Erie Canal, 1829”. “Its capitalists both send out and import a vast quantity of wheat, flour, beef and pork, pot and pearl ashes, whiskey, and so on….. Rochester supplies the adjacent country with all kinds of manufacturing goods..” (Par. 5, Hall). The Erie Canal was major part of the Market and Transportation Revolution. But there wasn’t only industrial changes, there also had to be gover nment and infrastructure changes. As it is decribed in the writing “James Madison Asks Congress to Support Internal Improvements , 1815”, James Madison expressed that after the War of 1812, America needs to make improvements in order to grow bigger as coun try. One great suggestion Madison had was the construction of roads and canals by the government in which leaded to the Transportation Revolution. But he didn’t only suggested infrastructure change, he also suggested an adjustment in tariffs on foreign pro ducts in order benefit domestic (American) manufactures which would eventually lead to the Industrial Revolution. In other words, “Business is booming”.
