Purpose of the Assignment:
This assignment gives you the opportunity to become the researcher. Your goal is to change or manipulate something about the way you communicate in an interpersonal relationship for a specified event or amount of time. Changes may be small or large, but should be based on course concepts and readings with the goal of impacting communication in that close relationship. Remember, it is vital to critically reflect on your experiment’s results in connection to Interpersonal communication theory.
Course material Looking Out, Looking in, 15th Edition.
Part 1: Before you conduct your experiment:
- Describe the background of the situation.
- Describe the specific change you decide to make and why you would like to explore that change (what you expect to happen — i.e., your hypothesis? What theory or research is your change decision based on?).
- Explain why you think the change could positively or negatively impact the relationship.
Part 2: After you conduct your experiment:
Describe what happened when you made the change (these are your overall observations, please be detailed – discuss your participants’ verbal and nonverbal reactions, etc.).
Explain the results and why you think you experienced those particular results (again, be sure to connect your reflection to course concepts).
Part 3: Paper Formatting Requirements:
Your paper should be 3 to 4 pages in length and address all parts of the requirements above. (This will be a taped speech.)
Your final paper must be: typed in black ink, Times New Roman, 12 –point font, double -spaced with 1-inch margins on all sides.
You should proofread all papers for typographical and grammatical errors and I expect that all written work will meet college level standards.
You will then present your findings in class in a presentation that will be from 3-4 Minutes in Length
Criteria for Evaluation:
This assignment is worth a total of 50 points (35 points for the paper and 15 points for the presentation.) I will grade this experiment on a scale of 0-50 based on how well you meet the criteria and address all requirements above.
