This exam contains seven pictures. You must choose ONE picture to analyze. The length of essay should be around two to three pages.
As I said on the first day of class, a historian is a social scientist. The pictures that you see here are evidence that we use to learn about the past. So your task is to tell me what you, as a social scientist, learn from these clues. In particular, you should do three things:
In Part I (10 points), you should tell me what you learn about the specific era or event from the picture. If it is a picture from World War II, for example, you should find at least FOUR good observations to make about the World War II era based on the picture. Please keep that last part in mind. If your entire discussion is simply a list of facts that you know about World War II, and has little or nothing to do with analyzing the specific content of the picture, you will not do well. Also, do make sure you explain your idea AND what it was in the picture that led you to that idea. If you don’t do both things for each of your four observations, you won’t be successful!
In Part II (5 points), you should connect your chosen image with the “big picture” of American history, using it to illustrate one thing that HAS NOT changed about America/Americans over time (your analysis should cover at least 50 years). In order to support your analysis, you will need to find four more images (in addition to the exam image), drawn from four different time periods. For example, if the exam image is from the 1930s, you might choose something from the 1870s, and something from the 1910s, and something from the 1960s, and something from the 1980s. If all of your images are from the same period–say, the Great Depression–then you are not doing it correctly.
In Part III (5 points), you should again connect your chosen image with the “big picture” of American history, this time using it to illustrate one thing that HAS changed about America/Americans over time (again, at least 50 years). As in Part II, you will need to find four more images from four different time periods (in addition to the exam image) to support your analysis.
The seven picture options are in the following file.
And other file is the example how to write this essay. In part II and III,you need to find four pictures online for each part and total eight pictures. These pictures should relate to each part.
