Discussion 1

One of the precepts of our society is that everyone should have an equal opportunity to succeed in life. However, continued racial discrimination has played a major role in denying people those equal opportunities. With that in mind, here is the 3 part question:
1. First, using the PBS diagram found on this website (http://www.umich.edu/~lawrace/consequences.htm#), I want you to identify how racial discrimination produces poorer job opportunities for racial minorities. There are many different explanations this diagram highlights so feel free to choose whichever pathway you like.
2. From there, explain how poorer job opportunities can in turn reinforce racial discrimination against those very disadvantaged groups creating a negative feedback loop (or vicious cycle). There are also different explanations this diagram highlights so feel free to choose whichever pathway you like.
3. Based on what you’ve learned, what do you think can be done to promote better job opportunities for racial minorities, in turn helping end some of these structural inequities and get our society one step closer towards having a real equal opportunity country?

Please note, if you scroll over the variables on the diagram, it will give you more detailed explanation of those variables. If you have trouble viewing the explanation due to glitches, try clicking on the variable and hold the mouse button down. I have found this is better at keeping the explanation on the screen.

Discussion 2

In most federal and state elections, voter turnout is very low. Only about 50% (or less) of the eligible voting population will ever vote in an election. With this in mind, please answer the following questions:

1. What do you think are the reasons why voter turnout is so low in this country?
2. State whether or not you think this is a good or bad thing and why.
3. Provide any possible means you think would help raise voter turnout in these elections.

Each discussion should have no less than 12 sentences and no more than 20 sentences! Cite at least 1 source for each discussion. NO PLAGIARISM.
