The Relationship between Social Anxiety and International Collegiate Students at PWIs. It will be outline for literature review
International Collegiate students face many obstacles throughout their college experience.
The major problems they face are having to deal with anxiety especially study anxiety (Vitasari,
Wahab, Othman, Herawan & Sinnadurai, 2010). Another problem they face are functioning in
English as well as completing their goals, and adjusting socially and culturally (Khoshlessan and
Das, 2017). Anxiety among international college students have increased from 6.7% in 2000 to
12.9% in 2013 (American College Health Association 2013).
Significance of Investigation
The research study could provide information on the issues of social anxiety and its
impact on International College Students who attends PWIs particularly on physical and
psychological functioning as well as their academic performances. Further, this study would also
be a review on college students adaptation to the change of environment in higher education
institutions based in the United States, particularly in their local area. This study would be
beneficial to predominately White populated Collegiate level Institutions with a high acceptance
rate of international students as well as International programs with responsibilities of matching
students to schools in the U.S. as this study enhance the knowledge of social anxiety and its
relations to International Students at PWIs as well as its effects on their physical and
psychological health, and academic performance. Furthermore, this study would be beneficial to
the predominately White Institutions and its international students as this study would provide
the necessary information on the different threats from having social anxiety. This would
expectedly heighten the awareness of how social anxiety can impact international students well-

being overall. To the future researchers, this study can provide baseline information on the recent
status of social anxiety among international collegiate students attending PWIs.
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to advance knowledge about how social anxiety relates to
International Students at PWIs and its effects on their physical and psychological health, and
academic performance.
Hypothesis
1.) It is hypothesized that the International students in this study will develop severe
symptoms of anxiety that will cause impairment in physical and psychological functioning long
term. 2.) It is also hypothesized that the International Students will show high academic
performance due to them prioritizing academic excellence (Bisson, 2017).
Rationale. 1) The balance theory by Heiders lead us to predict that international
collegiate students will form an isolation within their environment and peers due the internal
mapping of a new world. This type of isolation and confusion causes an impact on their well-
being (Cacioppo and Cacioppo, 2014). 2.) Since International college students are forming social
anxiety, we hypothesized that they will have more time on their academic work with little to no
distractions.
